Jim Thompson

Jim Thompson and his highly qualified carpenters have been providing professional carpentry works to visiting yachts in Newport over the past decade. We continue to receive high praise by numerous Captains we interviewed, for the excellent workmanship. Some comments noted: “Jim’s great, always on time, polite and tidy” “Guys are very skilled and not afraid of doing a dirty jobs” “Excellent… really gets it done - highly recommended.”

Jim has had extensive training as a traditional shipwright, with his first refit at 18 restoring a classic Herreshoff. Enthusiastic about classic yachts, he owns a wooden International One Design that he restored and continues to race today. Jim’s carpentry shop is located at the Newport Shipyard, where he has a team of 8 full time highly skilled carpenters working with him. Their main focus is mostly interior work, but they have done a major teak deck refit project on a 140’ yacht, removing the existing deck to custom build and install a new one.

They are able to accommodate any request involving wood, composite or vacuum veneers; including teak decking, mahogany cabinetry and fine furniture, specializing in veneers and wood selections to match existing woodwork, so the new piece looks like the original. From any small task to an entire deck refit, nothing is too big or small for this team, and their consistent high quality work.
