About The Netherlands
The Netherlands is a nation with close geographical and historical connections to the sea… a coastline stretching almost 500 kms, stunning 17th century canals, more than half the country lying below sea level, and 17% of the landmass being reclaimed from the sea and lakes. It is a low flat land, with mild winters providing a year-round pleasant climate that lends itself perfectly for coastal and inland waterway exploration. There’s much to enjoy on the water, this nation caters brilliantly for all kinds of water sports.
However in the marine industry, it is the world renown shipyards, new build and refit companies, and a network of suppliers and service providers, that the Netherlands is so hugely respected for, winning awards as a shipbuilding country of excellence.
The small section on services in Urk have been recommended to us by yacht crew with a yacht in refit at Balk Shipyard.
When not on board, or in the shipyard, take advantage of one of the most extensive cycle networks in the world. This small country has over 25,000 miles of high quality traffic free cycle routes (!) and on many occasions cyclists have priority over motorized traffic. This is a cyclist’s paradise, whether you are a beginner of a keen enthusiast.
This chapter on the Netherlands only touches the surface of what this country has to offer the Yachting industry; our research continues, so we rely on you to send us your recommendations and feedback.
