About The Bahamas

Lying some 70 miles east off Florida’s east coast, the Bahamas archipelago of islands extends southeastwards amidst an ocean of brilliant colours, with turquoise seas and white sandy beaches. If one includes the Turks and Caicos, there are more than 700 islands (of which about only 30 are inhabited) in an area of almost 100,000 square miles.

From Bimini in the north east of the chain and 50 miles due east of Miami, to Andros, the largest island in the Bahamas, New Providence with Nassau the capital to Long Island in the south – a fishing enthusiast’s haven! The islands are generally low lying, rising little more than 100ft above sea level, while the depth of water between the islands averages between 10 to 30ft over most of the area.

All around the plateaus on which the islands and cays are perched, the Atlantic Ocean plunges to great depths, making for a really spectacular cruising area. The islands are renowned for their gorgeous turquoise clear waters and seemingly endless array of uninhabited cays, with excellent diving and fishing, making them extremely popular charter destinations out of Florida.

The Bahamas are accessible by air and sea, with 20 international airports that receive scheduled flights from the US, Canada, Europe & Latin America. Most of the Bahamas is made up of ‘Out Islands’ with airstrips, many requiring connecting flights through Nassau, but will certainly take private jets. Sea planes will transfer owners and/or guests right to the yacht…

Large yachts can be accommodated at some excellent marinas & resorts, with full amenities. Walkers Cay in the Northern Abacos can accommodate superyachts up to 200ft LOA alongside luxury facilities and a 2600ft airstrip nearby to accommodate light aircraft.

For emergency haul-outs or planned maintenance, Bradford Marine Shipyard in Freeport has a 1200ton Drydock and a 150ton Travel Lift.

Recommended local provisioning suppliers and excellent yacht services agents are on hand, who will ensure those charter yachts on tight schedules are ready for guests.

Finally The Bahamas Charter Yacht Show will be held from 25th – 28th January 2024, in Nassau, welcoming charter brokers and colleagues in the industry from around the world.
